In France, a ban's on the way,
For smokers, it's a brand new day,
No more puffing where kids can play,
Outside schools, it's a no-smoking day.
Beaches, parks, and public spaces too,
Will be smoke-free, that's what they'll do,
Tobacco must disappear from view,
Where children breathe, that's what they'll pursue.
Catherine Vautrin said with a grin,
"The freedom to smoke must end within,
Where the freedom of children to breathe fresh air begins,
Is where the ban will start, no need to whine."
Terrasses, the outdoor cafe space,
Will be exempt, a special place,
But break the rules, and you'll pay the fee,
€135 fine, that's what you'll see.
Police will enforce, but self-regulation too,
Is what Vautrin believes will see it through,
E-cigs are exempt, but nicotine limits near,
Are what she's working on, to calm all fear.
In France, 23% smoke daily, a fall from before,
Since 2014, a drop of five points, and more,
75,000 smokers die each year, a sad, sad sight,
13% of all deaths, a tragic plight.
A ban on smoking's been in place since 2008,
In restaurants and nightclubs, it's a no-smoking spree,
1,500 municipalities have banned it too,
And hundreds of beaches, are smoke-free, it's true.
Almost 80% of French people agree,
On a ban on smoking, in public places, you see,
Woodland, beaches, parks, and terrasses too,
Will be smoke-free, that's what they'll do.
