In the UK, a change came to be,
In January 2025, a new tax to see,
VAT on school fees, a move so grand,
To fund state schools, across the land.
The government said, "We'll use the cash",
To hire 6,500 new teachers, a wonderful dash,
For maths and science, and other subjects too,
To help state schools, and see them through.
But private schools cried, "This isn't fair",
Their fees rose 22%, with no care,
A "triple whammy" hit them so hard,
National insurance, business rates, and VAT in the yard.
The ISC and some families took a stand,
In the High Court, with a human rights hand,
They claimed the policy was discriminatory and wrong,
And breached the law, where it didn't belong.
The government said, "We'll use the cash with care",
To help state schools, and show we truly care,
But the ISC said, "You've underestimated the test",
And that many pupils will be displaced, and won't find rest.
The court was told, that the government had a plan,
To raise £460m, and then £1.7bn, by hand,
To fund state schools, and help them thrive,
But the private schools, will they survive?
Only time will tell, if the challenge will succeed,
And the policy will change, or the government will proceed,
But one thing's for sure, the debate will rage,
Over VAT on school fees, and the rights of each stage.
