In the land of shoppers, a tale to be told,
Of Mastercard fees, and a story to unfold.
A lawsuit long-running, almost a decade old,
Led to a settlement, where shoppers could be bold.
Walter Merricks, a former ombudsman so fine,
Argued that shoppers were charged higher prices in line.
Fees were levied on transactions, for 15 years so long,
Between 1992 and 2008, a period so wrong.
No Mastercard needed, just living in the land,
In England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, to take a stand.
Three months minimum, between June 1997 and June 2008 too,
And buying goods or services, from UK businesses that accepted Mastercard, it's true.
In Scotland, the start is May 1992, don't you know?
The entire settlement is £200m, a sum to bestow.
£100m ringfenced, for consumers to claim,
With an online form, to register and gain.
Mr Merricks said, consumers will soon be able to say,
"I'm getting a payout, in a major way!"
He launched his claim, after the European Commission's decree,
That Mastercard's fees, had infringed competition law, you see.
The fees were paid by retailers, but passed on to the crowd,
Higher prices for goods and services, a burden so proud.
46 million shoppers, overcharged, it's a sad tale to tell,
But now a settlement, will make their wallets swell.
The Competition Appeal Tribunal, approved the deal,
A class action case, where shoppers will all feel.
The unclaimed cash, will go to the company that funded the fight,
But for those who claim, it's a payout, shining bright.
