Braids are a popular style for black women so fine,
Celebrity aunts wear them, and they're truly divine.
But questions arise about their impact on health and well-being,
Could this protective style be causing harm, or just a fleeting dream?
Growing up, I loved braids, a holiday treat so sweet,
No frizz, no fuss, just jump in the pool and take a seat.
Now as an adult, I turn to braids for a break from the fray,
Detangling's a chore, and dyeing's not worth the fray.
But a new study's raised concerns, about synthetic hair so bright,
Carcinogens and lead, a toxic mix, not a pretty sight.
Ten popular brands were tested, and all failed the test,
A warning to black women, to be aware of what they possess.
My cousin Rochelle does her braids with care and with skill,
But she's worried about the chemicals, that might cause harm still.
She calls braids a protective style, but now it's a concern,
Harming us, not helping, a shocking turn.
