In Sarajevo's streets, a problem's found,
Rats are thriving, all around.
Their numbers swell, their joy is free,
A pest control crisis, for you and me.
The Miljacka river, a rodent's delight,
Overflowing rubbish, a woeful sight.
Dead animals litter, children play,
A perfect breeding ground, day by day.
Health experts warn, of diseases to come,
Leptospirosis, a threat to everyone.
Rat-borne illnesses, a growing fear,
A dozen cases, in just one year.
The hospital's filled, with patients so fine,
Symptoms range, from headaches to decline.
Weil's disease, a severe form to bear,
Jaundice and kidney failure, a risk to share.
The local authorities, have declared an aid,
A clean-up effort, to banish the pest's trade.
Extra workers, armed with sprays so bright,
Disinfecting public areas, day and night.
Schools are directed, to clean their grounds,
Mow the grass, and check for rats around.
The city's on high alert, to prevent the spread,
A communal crisis, that's been long unsaid.
The health minister, Enis Hasanovic's view,
Is that it's not a health crisis, but a crisis anew.
A former director, Sebija Izetbegović's claim,
Is that the situation, could worsen, with hantavirus to blame.
So far, the cases, have been mild and few,
But left untreated, leptospirosis can be deadly, it's true.
A mortality rate, of over 50% so high,
A warning to Sarajevo, to take action, before they say goodbye.
