In Tesco's stores, a new tech did appear,
A VAR system, to help customers clear,
Shoplifting's a problem, a record high to share,
In the UK, it's a worry that's hard to bear.
Cameras watch from above, to see what's done right,
If an item's not scanned, a message will light,
"Remove from bagging area, and try again with care",
A live-action replay, to show shoppers they must share.
Some laughed and joked, with VAR in sight,
"Offside, disallowed, it's just not right",
Others complained, with a fearful little face,
"This is too much, I'll find a different place".
To shop without surveillance, without a single eye,
But Tesco's goal is to reduce shoplifting's high,
A record 516,971 offences, a number to abate,
The cost to retailers, £2 billion, a weight to create.
The system's been tested, in some stores so far,
A new way to check out, with a VAR-like star,
Sainsbury's has followed, with a similar move to make,
To reduce theft and shoplifting, for their customers' sake.
But some worry about data, and who gets to see,
The tracking of shoppers, a concern for you and me,
Are there rules to inform, before we enter the store?
How can we consent, to such invasive tech once more?
Heather from Nottingham, feels uncomfortable and blue,
"This tech punishes honest shoppers, it's not fair to do",
John from London, wonders about the rules of the game,
"How can we know, what's happening to our data's name?"
The debate rages on, about this new tech so bold,
Is it a step too far, or a necessary move to hold?
Only time will tell, as shoppers start to explore,
The new VAR system, and what it has in store.
