In the UK, a discovery was made one day,
West Nile virus found in mosquitoes in play,
Not a cause for alarm, the experts did say,
The risk is low, in a very major way.
The virus spreads from birds, but can bite,
People too, if an infected mosquito takes flight,
It's found in many places, far and wide,
Africa, South America, and Europe, where it resides.
Climate change brings it further north each year,
Mosquitoes and their diseases drawing near,
The virus can cause headaches, fever and more,
In rare cases, it can kill, a serious score.
No treatment or vaccine exists for humans, alas,
So prevention is key, in this health pass,
Get rid of standing water, where mosquitoes breed,
And use repellent, to keep them off your feed.
In the UK, there's been no human case so far,
But seven cases linked to travel, from afar,
The virus is present, in many a place,
And experts say, it's a changing health pace.
The Aedes vexans mosquito is native to Britain's shore,
But warming temperatures, may bring non-native ones to explore,
Prof Logan says, it's a serious development, indeed,
But no need to panic, just stay ahead.
Surveillance systems, monitor mosquito activity high,
And shifting bird migration, as the weather changes by,
The UK's no longer immune, to some diseases so rare,
A moment to recognize, that the future's not quite fair.
Infected birds or mosquitoes, can travel far and wide,
And transmit the virus, to humans, with a single bite inside,
But there's no evidence, of human infection in the UK land,
Yet, the detection of the virus, marks a significant hand.
