In London's Thames, a water tale unfolds,
A £3bn loan, with troubles to hold.
Their bosses wanted big bonuses to pay,
50% of their pay, in a most lavish way.
But Downing Street said, "No, that won't do,
Rewarding failure, is not what we pursue."
The Environment Secretary spoke out with flair,
"This is not right, and we must show we care."
Thames Water said, "We'll pause and review,
Our retention scheme, to see what we can do."
They'll wait for guidance from Ofwat's steady hand,
To ensure their approach, is in line with the land.
Their spokesperson said, "We never meant to offend,
The government's ambition, to reform the water trend."
But critics say, "You tried to sneak it through,
By calling it something different, that's not true."
Thames Water's finances, in a dire state,
A £20bn debt, that's a weight to create.
They secured a loan, to stave off collapse,
But now they must reduce their debt, by taking a small fall.
Their customers will still get water and waste,
As normal, without a single waste.
The Environment Secretary said, "I'm very happy to say,
Thames Water dropped the scheme, in a most welcome way."
But some say, "It's just a pause, not a complete stop,
They'll find another way, to pay their top folk."
The chairman said, "I might have misspoken, I confess,
We need to provide packages, to keep our top people, I guess."
